Hormonal Coil (Mirena® IUS) Fitting & Removal
Specialist hormonal coil fitting for contraception, heavy periods and endometrial protection during HRT
A hormonal coil (also known as an intrauterine system or IUS) is one of the most effective forms of contraception available. It can also be an excellent treatment for heavy or painful periods and is commonly used as the progesterone component of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
At Time to Pause, all coil procedures are performed by Dr Rebecca Jacques, an experienced GP with advanced training in women’s health and contraception. My aim is to make the procedure as comfortable as possible, ensuring you feel fully informed and supported throughout.
Appointments take place in a calm, private clinical environment at Stockton House, Southam, Warwickshire.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Mirena® coil last?
The Mirena® coil can provide contraception for up to 8 years (depending on current guidance and the reason it was fitted). When used as the progesterone component of HRT, it is generally licensed for 5 years for endometrial protection.
Is fitting a coil painful?
Everyone's experience is different. Most women experience some cramping during the procedure, but it usually settles quickly. I'll explain each step as we go and do everything possible to make you feel comfortable.
Can I have a hormonal coil if I'm taking HRT?
Yes. A Mirena® coil is commonly used to provide the progesterone component of HRT while oestrogen is taken separately.
How long will my appointment take?
The fitting procedure itself is relatively quick, but we allow plenty of time to ensure you don't feel rushed and have an opportunity to ask any questions.
Do I still need contraception during perimenopause?
Usually, yes. Most women require contraception until the age of 55, although this varies depending on the method being used and your individual circumstances.
Can I drive home afterwards?
Most women can drive home afterwards, although some prefer to arrange for someone to accompany them, particularly if they've not had a coil fitted before.
